1. Pack and close the bag
Load the bag as it will reach the gate. Close every zip and compression strap. Put bottles, jackets and travel pillows where they will actually be carried; anything attached outside changes the outer size.
2. Measure the widest exterior points
Place the bag on a flat surface and measure the three maximum outer dimensions. Include wheels, fixed and folded handles, feet, frame edges and bulging pockets. Do not press the tape into a soft side to create a smaller reading.
3. Weigh everything together
Weigh the packed bag on a luggage scale or stand on a household scale with and without it, then subtract. Where the airline states a limit, keep a small margin for scale differences and anything added at the airport.
4. Select the correct airline and entitlement
Use the operating carrier shown for the flight segment. Then select the exact fare, baggage add-on, qualifying seat or status. A large cabin bag may fit the aircraft but still not be included in your ticket.
Does rotation count?
Usually the physical question is whether the bag fits the three-dimensional sizer in any orientation. The BagFit EU checker sorts the bag and limit dimensions before comparison, so entering 40 × 30 × 20 gives the same answer as 20 × 40 × 30.
Rotation cannot rescue a bag when one sorted side remains too large. Nor does a dimensional pass override a separate weight limit or underseat-placement requirement.
Hard cases and soft cases
| Bag type | Main risk | Best practice |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-shell case | Wheels and handles are easy to overlook | Measure from the outermost fixed points |
| Soft backpack | Depth increases when overfilled | Pack first and measure across bulges |
| Expandable case | Expansion zip changes the size | Measure in the exact configuration you will use |
| Bag with straps | Loose straps obstruct the sizer | Secure them without compressing the bag beyond normal use |
Final pre-flight check
- Measure again after the final pack.
- Leave a small practical margin instead of targeting an exact fit.
- Check every operating airline on a connecting itinerary.
- Open the official rule linked in your result before departure.
